"Mental Chains" was created to express how I felt about the educational system. Education is very important but the absence of diversity in the cultures taught doesn't give students of color the framework for understanding who they are and where they come from. As an African American student, I know firsthand that you can feel isolated and not connected to the material. Diversity is important and having diverse teachers and educational influencers helps students learn more and can positively impact their performance. I wanted to create something that connects to my cultural background. Although slavery chains have been physically broken our mental health in today's social society can be forgotten.
